OpenAI, the renowned US-based artificial intelligence company behind ChatGPT, has recently announced a strategic partnership with G42, a prominent AI firm in the United Arab Emirates. The collaboration is geared towards deploying OpenAI’s cutting-edge generative AI models across various sectors, including finance, energy, healthcare, and public services within the UAE and its wider region.
Under the chairmanship of Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan—the UAE’s national security adviser—G42 aims to leverage OpenAI’s profound expertise to empower businesses and communities with tailor-made solutions that align perfectly with regional nuances.
“Leveraging G42’s industry expertise, we aim to empower businesses and communities with effective solutions that resonate with the nuances of the region,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.
Although specific financial details were not disclosed at this time, this alliance forms part of a larger endeavor by the UAE government to foster its technological ecosystem and position itself as an international powerhouse for AI innovation.
Among their initiatives is the world-renowned Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence—the first-ever graduate-level institution solely dedicated to advancing AI research and education.
A Boost for AI Infrastructure and Regulation
The partnership will benefit from the existing AI infrastructure in the UAE, including Microsoft’s Azure data centers. G42, as part of its AI platform to boost regional adoption, plans to use these resources.
Additionally, G42 has collaborated with Cerebras Systems, a US-based AI firm, to develop the world’s largest supercomputer for AI training. The partnership also aims to support the region’s development of AI regulation and governance.
During his visit to Abu Dhabi in June as part of his AI “world tour,” Sam Altman expressed support for international regulation of AI advancements. He commended the UAE’s early adoption of AI and their proactive approach towards discussions on this topic before it became popular.
A Milestone for ChatGPT Creator OpenAI
The partnership represents a significant milestone for OpenAI, established in 2015 with the purpose of aligning AI with human values and benefiting humanity as a whole. Over the years, OpenAI has emerged as a prominent player in the field of AI, especially after launching ChatGPT.
OpenAI remains committed to promoting accessibility by offering tools like ChatGPT Playground, which allows anyone to engage with their models. The partnership with G42 is expected to expand OpenAI’s presence in the Middle East and beyond while presenting new opportunities and challenges for the AI community.
